This is Jennifer’s Story…

KentHOPE is a partnership in Kent, Washington of faith-based groups, Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, Valley Cities Counseling and Consultation, businesses, local community service agencies and concerned individuals who are dedicated to reducing homelessness in our community.

Our Mission is to build community by providing stable pathways out of homelessness while caring for body, mind, and spirit.

We are the congregations and individuals who provide meals for the homeless and low income members of our communities.  (see community meals tab above for a list of free community meals). We also meet emergency needs of community members through the distribution of benevolence funds donated by our congregations.

On December 16, 2013, KentHOPE and Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission (SUGM) established the KentHOPE Day Center for Women and Children at 9009 Canyon Drive. We serve an average of 30 women and 3 children a day, meeting their immediate needs and linking them to community resources to find jobs and housing.

In March of 2014, KentHOPE and SUGM initiated the KentHOPE Women’s Overnight Shelter, a rotating shelter hosted by Kent churches, April through October.  (Holy Spirit Parish hosts the Catholic Community Services Women’s Winter Shelter, November through March.)  In 2015, we were able to expand the number of overnight beds to 30, thanks to funding by the City of Seattle Human Services Department. Eleven generous Kent churches now provide year ’round overnight shelter, in addition to Holy Spirit/Catholic Community Services’ 15 bed Women’s Winter Shelter. Thank you Kent United Methodist, First Evangelical Presbyterian, New Beginnings Christian Fellowship, Kent Lutheran, First Presbyterian, Lutheran Church of the Cross, Kent Covenant, New Heights, First Christian, Valley View Christian, and Zion Lutheran!

We have also established a local safe parking site for families and individuals living in their car. A social services case manager visits the site weekly to offer assistance.

Search and Rescue volunteers deliver blankets, clothing, hot chocolate, encouragement and prayer to homeless sites in Kent on Wednesdays and Fridays year round.

KentHOPE is moving forward with our partner, Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission (SUGM), towards our vision of a 24/7 KentHOPE Resource Center in Kent, to provide hope and assist men and women who are homeless in pathways to stable housing and a more secure future.

  6. I used to own a side business in a different state, and when I moved here I no longer had time for my side business. Now it is time to clean out my garage and I have about 500 pairs of clogs similar to Crocs foam shoes ranging in all sizes for kids and adults that I would like to donate somewhere and not a place that will make money off of what I have already paid for. Is this something I could donate to kent hope?

    1. YES!! Thank you, Teresa! Please take them to Seattle Union Gospel Mission’s Distribution Center in Kent, 8226 S. 208th St, 98032. Open Monday – Saturday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. You will receive a donation receipt. Our KentHOPE guests as well as more than 100 women and children who reside in Seattle Union Gospel Mission’s recovery program and transitional housing will have access to the shoes. Thanks for your concern for our homeless neighbors!

    1. Hi Miriam,

  7. My company has done some charitable work for Kent Hope in the past (food drive, I think). We are currently looking for some community volunteer opportunities that our employees could participate in on Friday morning July 15th (and it could go into afternoon too). It could be anything a team of general labor could accomplish in a morning: washing, moving, mowing, carrying, packing, painting, cleaning, fixing, repairing, replacing…you name it. If you have a need at your Kent location that we could fill, would you let me know and we can discuss? I have to have my ideas back to the planning team next week :-). Thx!

    1. Thank you for your previous support! We look forward to having your company help us again in the future. We will contact you by email to get a better feel for the size of your team and t discuss types of needs that could be addressed. You may also email us at info@kenthope.org

  8. Good morning,

I signed up for Saturday 2/21/16.I’m interested in doing a paint or coloring project with the women and their children. I was very recently homeless for 2yrs because of domestic violence situation, so I don’t have the funds for the equipment I would need to use. Is there anyway that the center could provide utensils for this project?

    Thank you 🙂

    1. Yes, I’m sure we can help. Please call the Day Center at (253) 480-2325 and speak to a staff person about what you need.

  9. My son’s coach would like his team of 17 7th and 8th grade boys to give back to the community. Do you have any volunteer projects that could use a group that big?

  10. I have a nice short queen mattress (no box spring) that needs a home. It has only been slept on a handful of times. Would this be something you could use? Would love to see it put to good use rather than a landfill. Thanks for the wonderful work you do.

  11. We are a military family being transferred overseas. We cannot bring liquids. Can we donate shampoos, makeup and other beauty products to you?

    1. Thanks, Kim. Yes, our guests appreciate and enjoy choosing from a variety of shampoos, makeup and beauty products. Please drop them off at the Day Center (9009 Canyon Drive in Kent) at your convenience and give them to a staff person.
Thanks for thinking our our homeless neighbors and best wishes in your next home!
